Du Cui Que plans to burn the military supplies and seize control of Jinling, while Lan Xiang prepares the Lin household for an attack. When the pirates storm the city, Lan Xiang and the women defend the family home, while Lin Jin Qi confronts Zhang Shui Zai at the supply ships. Seeking revenge against Lin Jin Qi, Du Cui Que sends Zhang Shui Zai to attack Yuan Shao Hui’s forces, and Yuan Shao Hui dies while trying to protect his men. As the political situation worsens, Lin Jin Qi prepares to transport military supplies, unaware of the full extent of Du Cui Que’s plans.

With Lan Xiang’s help, Lin Jin Qi and the Lin family matriarch negotiate with the Yuan family to protect Lin Xiu Ru and her daughters’ interests.

Lan Xiang warns Lin Jin Qi about the dangers of blindly serving the emperor and urges him to consider the Lin family’s future. After Second Master’s death and news of the Old Madam’s passing, Lin Jin Qi decides to resign and return to Jinling. Back home, Lan Xiang grows closer to Lin Jin Qi and helps prepare for Fourth Miss’s upcoming marriage.

Lin Xiu Lai seeks help from her aunt Wang Ling Xiao to separate from her husband Lu Jian, but Ling Xiao is more worried about the family reputation and how the younger cousins will be able to find marriage prospects. Even with proof of severe abuse, Ling Xiao counsels Xiu Lai to stay in the marriage. If not for Lin Xiu Wan's interference, Lan Xiang would not have known about the abuse and would not have known to act swiftly to get Xiu Lai out of the Lu household.

Lan Xiang goes against Zhao Xing Tang to get Lu Ji Er and Xiao Pu's indenture papers. Xing Tang wanted 30,000 taels of silver, but Lan Xiang offered her something better: a way for a woman in her position to keep the money she earns, so that it doesn't end up in her family's coffers or her husband's hands. Once free, Lu Ji Er and Xiao Pu decide they want to start new lives in a new city. They chose Quanzhou, and A Zhi decides to join them. Lan Xiang gives Lu Ji Er gold, equivalent to 500 taels of silver, only revealed right before they boarded their caravan. A Zhi, who was rescued by Master Lu and Lan Xiang's father from the Qingyan brothel, reappears and claims to have information on Ji Er's whereabouts.

Lan Xiang has made it very clear that she's unhappy in her marriage, so Lin Jin Qi appeases her as much as he can. In the bridal chamber, as soon as the veil is lifted, Lan Xiang slaps her new husband, who commands the crowd to leave and keep the incident quiet.

Jin Qi, along with Jiu Gao and Nan Ke, return near the end of the maids' celebratory banquet at Lin Manor. Jin Qi offers a toast to a drunk Lan Xiang.

During the altercation between the Wo pirates and Commander Yuan, Du Zheng makes an unexpected move, eventually resulting in a grave injury. In the meantime, time is running out for those who remained ill at the Lin Manor. In an attempt to obtain an antidote to the poison, Lan Xiang takes a huge gamble, one Lady Du had not foreseen.

Once Lin Manor is sealed, First Madam divides up which courtyard will house the sick and which will house those who have no symptoms. Lin Xiu Ru confides in Lan Xiang that she had Du Cui Que's maid, Ling Dang, follow; Ling Dang only spoke to two maids carrying bath water, then returned to Cui Que's courtyard. Lan Xiang's roommate also mentions that Lady Du said it was too bad Jin Qi had to leave after his bath. No matter how tired she was, Lan Xiang's mind was working overtime and couldn't let go of all the talk about bath water. She started to wonder whether the epidemic was not contagious but was brought on by poison instead. In the meantime, Lin Jin Qi and the Marquis have their own traps to set to catch those trying to kill them.

Lin Xiu Ru witnesses Lin Xiu Wan and Du Zheng in an embrace. In a panic, she manages to disrupt their tryst and looks for her brother to seek his advice. Unfortunately, Jin Qi was urgently called away before she could tell him. Marquis Yong Chang and Jin Qi have their hands full with dead prisoners and being assassination targets. Lin Jin Qi is released, and he becomes increasingly drawn to Jialan after seeing how confidently she speaks to the soldiers.

Jia Lan disguises herself as a woman looking for sewing work and successfully enters a suspicious household connected to the investigation. When her identity is discovered, she is placed in danger, but Lin Jin Qi and his men arrive in time. After examining the evidence, Lin Jin Qi suspects that the merchant Lu Da Lang was actually a Japanese pirate and that someone in the court may be helping them.

As a reward for her actions, Jia Lan asks for a day off to visit her parents and medicine for her mother’s frostbite. Meanwhile, Lin Jin Qi is suspended after soldiers die from poor-quality winter uniforms, putting his investigation and Second Miss’s marriage prospects in jeopardy. Jia Lan then suggests a way to track down the merchant responsible.

The Lin family arranges a gathering for eligible young men as they begin considering a marriage for Second Miss. Jia Lan discovers that a delphinium flower ornament given to Lin Jin Qi could cause damaging rumors about his relationship with Du Cui Que. Using her quick thinking, she finds a way to prevent the misunderstanding from spreading.

Lin Jin Qi struggles to obtain supplies for his soldiers and relies on Du Zheng, who once saved his life, for help. Du Zheng and his younger sister Du Cui Que become connected to the Lin household, while Jia Lan earns a position in the inner study because of her literacy. After the divorce, the Lin household undergoes major changes, and Yu Chan returns after separating from her husband. With Zhao Xing Tang gone, Jia Lan and the other maids finally have the chance to begin a more peaceful life.

At Zhao Xing Tang’s mother’s birthday celebration, Jialan notices that something is wrong and tries to keep Xiao Lian safe. Lin Jin Qi also begins watching the situation around Jin Xiu Fang, while Jia Lan tries to protect herself and Xiao Lian. Afterward, Lin Jin Qi confirms that Jia Lan can read and asks her to help him investigate.

Jia Lan begins suspecting that Zhao Xing Tang has someone outside the household and notices that Lin Jin Qi is investigating her affairs. Lin Jin Qi then asks Jia Lan to secretly become his eyes and ears.
